PNB Escolta Circa mid 60s

I joined Erlanger and Galinger in 1964. At that time, PNB was in Escolta and we were working to provide PNB with an NCR 315 system. We secured the contract and Mr. Marganeu came from Dayton to assist in the conversion. He was ably assisted by our Gil Espinosa and our software group. .The then vice president of PNB, Mr. Villatuya, signed the contract.

Mr. F.L. "Francis Leroy" Burris was in-charge of TSD at that time.

It was a most successful installation.

The PNB 315 was similar to this:
To the left is the console with a teletype printer.
The taller units housed the processor and memory units.

With two CRAM units.

CRAM stood for Card Random Access Memory.

When I got back from Dayton training, Florentino "Totoy" Mercader, then national manager for Erlanger and Galinger TSD operations,  met me at the airport and instructed me to report directly to UN data center every working day- no need to report to TSD (FED) office at Port Area. Arturo "Art" Uy and three ex-patriate Japanese engineers would also be reporting at the UN office, too. Art's 315 training partner in Dayton, Ned, had left the company by then. Nic Casenas came a few weeks after me because he had appendectomy in US. I stayed at UN for several months. In the meantime the rest of the engineers composing the first batch have already arrived.

The three Japanese engineers, who had prior experience at Sumitomo Bank's on-line system, helped install PNB's 315 system. They left when things got stable enough and Tony Briones, our supervisor then, assigned me to the 8:30 to 3:30 on-line banking hours- a slot I held for about 2 years. Tony assigned other engineers to do daily PM and other support duties during the day, such that TSD (FED) was on the job 24/7!

____________
In those days circa 1965, Erlanger and Galinger was "the company" and NCR, the Dayton, Ohio company business was just part of Erlanger and Galinger's day to day operations. But that NCR part was growing big and sometime in 1968, the NCR (Philippine) Corporation came into being.

At around the time that PNB's online system stabilized, I was happily servicing NCR's open carriage Accounting Machines, the NCR 31 and the similar 32, 33 and 34 models. Until Mr. Pacifico "Boy" delos Santos, TSD manager for Manila operations, said "Mania, starting tomorrow you report to the PNB onsite engineer- he will brief you on everything that you need to know.about your new assignment."

Escolta Fire

Prominent on the news this week was:

As firefighters tried to contain the blaze, a chunk of concrete fell on fire volunteer Eric Lua who was then rushed to Chinese General Hospital.
The entire Escolta Street was closed as fire razed portions of the building that was formerly occupied by the defunct City College of Manila, now Universidad de Manila located in Ermita.
From the eighth floor, flames reached up to the 14th floor. The Bureau of Fire Protection raised the fire alert to Task Force Bravo.

Hmmmmm!

Hmmmmm (again)! This looks familiar!!!

It is the City College of Manila alright!

In another life it was the
Philippine National Bank
!!!

PNB Escolta has been around for generations- PNB maintained a branch on the ground floor until the building eventually burned down. The above building came into existence sometime in the '60s, when Escolta (and Binondo and, to some extent, Ermita, too) were the hub of our financial community.
